Wearable tech. What’s the point?

Fantastic. More technology we should all be buying. I can’t speak for everyone else, but I’ve always struggled to pick up my iPhone without spontaneously dropping it on the floor! So thank God I can finally wear a pair of glasses with a giant computer chip strapped to the side.

It’s probably fair to say I have a certain level of skepticism when it comes to new gizmos and gadgets. I was none too impressed when first introduced to the most well-known piece of “wearable tech”: Google Glass.

But I was very quickly converted. When told that these futuristic-looking goggles could help surgeons monitor a patient’s vital signs during surgery, I could start to see the bigger picture. The potential benefits for the healthcare community are huge; something I could get very excited about.

There are far too many technologies and potential uses to list here, and I’m not sure I could do them justice. So my advice is to get online and explore. A good place to start is the Guardian’s coverage of this year’s Wearable Tech show in London.

I just want to pull out one example, showing you how a simple idea can have exponential benefits.

Reemo – described as the wrist worn mouse to control your world – turns the real world into a point and click environment, recognising simple pointing and waving gestures that update receivers hooked up to home appliances.

You may be thinking, what’s the point in that?

Well, imagine someone who has suffered a stroke or an elderly person who have severely impaired movement. This gadget will allow them to carry out everyday tasks that were once a little too far out of their reach, helping restore their independence. But don’t take my word for it, have a look yourself.

Explore wearable tech and embrace it, because it’s definitely here to stay.
