Just:: about my internship by Ankur Perry

I’m currently completing a PhD in neuroscience, and wish to use my scientific knowledge in my future career. To follow this path, I looked for an internship within healthcare and life sciences, and found HAVAS Just::

The placement ticked all my boxes, as it offered the chance to learn about healthcare communications and play an active role in disseminating messages to doctors, patients, journalists and the general public.

M3On the first day, I was quite nervous about being introduced to so many new people and felt the pressure of performing to a high standard. Of course, I had nothing to worry about. Everyone was so friendly and I settled in very quickly.

I soon had the opportunity to get involved in a wide variety of projects. My role included public relations, medical education, media relations, and more traditional healthcare comms. There are so many examples I could share, but one really stands out.

One of the first projects I was involved in was the Bears4Rare’ campaign – a PR stunt using a pyramid of 1,000 teddy bears in Waterloo station to raise awareness for rare diseases, both in person and through encouraging media coverage of the event. My biggest challenge was speaking to the public (especially as the client was present!); I can be quite shy but being given that opportunity allowed me to step up and develop my confidence. It ended up being one of my favourite days at the agency, and I learnt on the job and enhanced my abilities.

During the internship, I learnt that organising your time is never more important than when working in teams, and it’s better to speak up if you’re unsure. Also, that consistency is crucial in a career; demonstrating and developing your skills can make you a ‘go-to’ person, which creates demand for your abilities and also builds your assertiveness to push yourself further.

Havas Just:: is an incredibly inclusive and social environment. I joined at a great time, with two weeks at the old office in Putney before the big move to HKX. A particular highlight (among numerous social events during my three months!) was the old office leaving party, where I stepped outside and saw a fish and chips van cooking fresh food just for us, then returned to watch the cocktail specialist create tasty concoctions, while colleagues sang karaoke and played beer pong. Great night!

After the fun send off, I have to say the new office is incredible. I have never seen such a stylish workspace, nor have I had such good food from a canteen! Playing the odd game of pool is a great way to relieve some stress, and if I needed a quiet moment I would pop out onto the balcony for a beautiful and breezy view of Regent’s Canal and Granary Square.

Overall, the internship was a fantastic experience and I’m so glad I seized the opportunity. For anyone considering an internship at Havas Just::, I would advise the same – seize the opportunity. The environment is very friendly and encourages you to be your best. Finally, put yourself out there; get involved whenever possible and you will be making the most of your time. I guarantee that you will learn new skills, build on your abilities, and also enjoy yourself!
